White Widow is a sativa-dominant hybrid strain of cannabis that hails from the Netherlands. Even though there are several strains that have been around for much longer, White Widow is one of the most recognizable cannabis strains in the world. Thanks to its many awards, consistency and powerfulness, and ease of cultivation, White Widow is a popular strain among both users and growers.

What is the Origin of the White Widow Strain?

White Widow is a product of Green House Seeds, a company based in the Netherlands. However, genetically, White Widow is much more diverse. This hybrid was born of a Brazilian sativa landrace strain and a South Indian indica. Now, White Widow is available throughout much of the world, though it is especially popular in North America and Europe.

The Lineage Of White Widow

As previously stated, White Widow resulted from crossing a Brazilian sativa landrace strain with a South Indian indica. Though it is sativa-dominant, it contains about 40% indica genetics. White Widow has produced several hybrid children of its own, including White Russian, White Rhino, Blue Widow, and Big Buddha’s King Kong.

White Widow History

White Widow came into being in the Netherlands sometime in the early 1990s. It was first developed by Green House Seeds, though it is now produced by numerous growers throughout the world. Upon its initial release, White Widow became an instant hit in Amsterdam. Residents could find it in just about every coffee shop in the city.

Soon after, White Widow spread throughout Europe, eventually reaching California in the mid-1990s. The strain even won the High Times Cannabis Cup in 1995, thus cementing its popularity in North America. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, White Widow was used to create several other high-quality hybrids.

Today, White Widow is one of the most popular strains for both recreational and medical users. Its resin-heavy nugs are highly potent, but it still produces a great experience for both cannabis connoisseurs and first-time users. Additionally, White Widow is widely available throughout the world, giving millions of people easy access to an already popular strain.

How Is The White Widow Strain Grown?

White Widow can be grown in both indoor and outdoor environments. Its mold-resistance makes it suited for outdoor cultivation, however, it can be very sensitive to temperature changes. White Widow plants thrive in climates that stay between 21 – 26 degrees Celsius. Though White Widow has low crop yields, it does not require high-maintenance cultivation.

Physical Traits of the White Widow Strain

The White Widow plant is relatively tall, growing up to 1.7 meters in height. The flowers are densely-packed and white in color. White Widow plants produce long, thin leaves and buds that are full of resin.

What Does White Widow Look Like?

White Widow nugs are white, with plenty of crystal resin. They are also covered with long trichomes. Though somewhat chunky in nature, White Widow nugs usually break up very easily.

What Aroma Does White Widow Have?

White Widow has a very strong odor that is both herbal and earthy. Though there are vague notes of citrus, these are generally overpowered by an aroma similar to incense.  This smell is made stronger when the nugs are broken up, and the smells tend to linger even after consumption.

What flavors can you expect from White Widow?

Unfortunately, White Widow is not known for having a distinct flavor. White Widow tastes relatively earthy, but its flavor is not nearly as strong as its aroma. In any case, it lacks the fruit and citrus flavors that are common in many other popular strains.
